One of the number one challenges we see in the health and fitness industry? The relationships that have been established and are continually reinforced, around food.
Among the worst- earning our “treats.”
Our take: We aren’t dogs. Food isn’t a reward. Treating your food like it’s something to be earned fuels an unhealthy relationship with the very thing we rely on to function and grow. It’s time to stop thinking calories determine the success of a workout or the benefit of food. We can’t believe how many people still won’t eat bananas (too many carbs, too much sugar), but dive right into the low calorie, macro approved Halo Top. Sigh.
We spend a lot of time coaching women learn not to label foods as good or bad, how to understand there is tangible value in all foods (yes, even cookies) and the trick is making choices that align with what we want to value. We don’t have to deprive ourselves or feel guilt, shame or fear around eating. We are literally designed to eat for fuel and energy. And it’s fun to eat for experience and pleasure. And when we workout we don’t need a gold star or a a “reward” in the form of a “bad food” choice. We don’t have to earn our food or use workouts to burn off choices we made. Our workouts are to care for our body, to strengthen, relieve stress, move our bodies and have some fun. The undoing of the dog training mentality, doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, it can be messy (almost as messy as our hair), challenging, require support, coaching. But it’s possible. Trust two girls that were there.
Once you stop treating donuts like a treat you earned from breaking a sweat and start treating both your workouts (fun) and donuts (yum) for the value they offer, things change. Not a short-term diet fad change. Actual real, lifelong change.
When they do and Aunt Debbie who is attached to the number on a wrapper tries to complicate things with all the stuff you’ve finally left behind, you can smile and eat the cookie. And that feels pretty damn good.
