Read below to find out what featured writer Jessica Christin did to help her body recover after years of excessive exercise and calorie restriction that led to adrenal fatigue and hormonal imbalances
For most of my teen and adult life I was totally sucked into the diet and fitness culture that our society pushes onto women.
GROSS! I actually get chills when I think about how incredibly backwards and TOTALLY wrong these messages are, and they are being thrown in our faces everywhere with the latest detoxes, boot camps, Instagram pages you name it.
Want to know what this way of living did to me? It caused the following symptoms:
- Losing my period for over 2 years
- Thinning hair
- Poor sleep
- Poor digestion
- Adrenal fatigue
- Weight GAIN- yup, that is right I was doing all the “right” things and I started gaining weight out of NOWHERE
What did I do? I spent a lot of time feeling totally lost and hopeless, I felt like an alien in my own skin and I would actually cry when I looked in the mirror. I would google for hours trying to figure out why my body was giving out and I was grasping for ANYTHING that would make me feel myself again.
I FINALLY realized I had to completely alter not only my lifestyle but also my mindset. Here are the MAJOR changes I made that resulted in bringing my body back into balance.
1. I started eating ENOUGH of the RIGHT foods!
I started adding real, WHOLE foods back into my diet specifically a lot of super healthy fats and proteins which are the building blocks for your cells and hormones. Avocado, nuts and seeds, wild salmon, grass fed beef, grass fed butter, olive oil, the list goes on and boy does food taste SO much better with fat!
2. I stopped killing myself in the gym
I was that girl who was running 5 miles and then going to a hot power yoga class, if I was not sweating my ass off by the end I felt as if I had failed. I had to totally change my approach to fitness. I pretty much stopped intense cardio all together.
I started doing low impact exercise; walking and more yoga. The biggest change was rather than run 5-6 days a week I started strength training 2-3 days a week and eventually got BETTER results!
If you want to learn more about the WHY behind this, then you can check out my blog on using strength training to heal metabolic damage HERE.
3. I changed my mindset
I had to work through some serious deep seeded limiting beliefs about my body and myself. This involved going to therapy, starting a meditation practice and finding a spiritual practice through using manifestation and the law of attraction. Some of my favorite influencers in this area are Abraham Hicks, Jen Sincero, Brene Brown and Rachel Hollis.
This will vary in every case, but if there are other imbalances in the body this can inhibit you from fully healing, because it is inducing a stress response. I had to work with a functional doctor in order to heal my gut from bacteria and parasite, as well as support my adrenal glands because I was SO burnt out.
I am naturally a go, go, go person and resting is truly hard for me! During this process I had to learn to allow myself to rest and recover this meant:
- Prioritizing sleep over exercise
- Finding a daily meditation/gratitude practice
- Walking daily
- Finding a sleep routine
5. Finally, I was patient!
I did not get myself into the mess I was in overnight so healing from all of this was also not going to happen overnight. This can be THE most difficult piece, when you are doing all of the right things and feeling like you are not seeing results you want.
Your body WANTS to be balanced and it WANTS to feel good! I promise, with time and patience as you start to love the body you are in RIGHT now and work with it rather than against it, it will respond, and when it does it is truly a magical, empowering and amazing feeling.
So, hang in there because I am living proof that this is all possible! If you want to learn more about me, my story and working with me please check out my website:
